Katie Hale, executive director of the Undergraduate Student Senate, called for unity among student leaders in her inaugural address last night at the 29th Annual Student Leadership Honors Awards Celebration & Inauguration.

Hale said she wants to “unite together to accomplish the goals we set forth for the common good of our fellow students.”

“After all, that is what we, as students leaders, are here to do,” she said. “When we received the honor of being elected or appointed to our positions, we pledged to commit ourselves to responsibilities, and in doing so, we strive for the betterment of Kent State.”

Pete Goldsmith, vice president of enrollment management and student affairs, administered the oath of office to the 2007-2008 USS and Graduate Student Senate and the commitment to service oath to all newly elected student officers in organizations.

Following Hale’s speech, Edward Moreira, executive chair of the GSS, extended an invitation to USS “to work together to achieve bigger and greater goals.”

Moreira said the goal of any level of student government is to “serve the student body as whole whether we are graduate students or undergraduates.”

President Lester Lefton, who spoke at beginning of the ceremony, thanked the students for their work throughout the year at Kent State.

“I’m proud of your achievements,” he said. “I know the dividends of your time and energy.”
