Careers Over Coffee program to take place next week

Looking for a way to connect with professionals and learn about today’s job market? Careers Over Coffee offers this and more to students looking for answers.

The Alumni Association and co-sponsors will provide a venue for networking opportunities to bring students and alumni together to speak about professional experiences Feb. 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Student Center.

There are four different sessions scheduled for this semester, and each session targets various areas of study. The sessions include panels on teaching, law, journalism and psychology.

Each program brings in professionals with experience in the specified work force. The speakers discuss the importance of preparing for a career in a specific field. They also provide assistance with resum‚ preparation, interviewing skills and finding the most beneficial internships.

Junior nursing major Kate Bailey attended the program last semester and found it to be a great resource offered to students.

“I decided to attend because I think it is a great opportunity to talk to alumni who are out in the field working to see what it’s really like when you get a job,” Bailey said. “They are just very helpful in answering all your questions, and from my experience, they were more than happy to give you contact information if you had further questions or anything of that nature.”

Matt Butts, assistant director of alumni relations, said the program allows students who may not have family members or contacts working within their desired field the opportunity to meet with experienced professionals. Networking also takes place at the program and students learn valuable information for their future in the workforce.

“The meetings allow students to talk to as many people as possible and develop personal relationships for the future,” Butts said.

Students must R.S.V.P. for this event by Feb. 16 by calling (330) 672-5368 or by e-mail at [email protected]. The list of scheduled speakers can be found on the Alumni Association’s Web site at www.kent.edu/alumni/CareerAssistance/Careers-Over-Coffee.cfm.

Speakers are Kent State alumni and volunteer their time to meet with students. Alumni are encouraged to participate in the program and can contact the Alumni Association at (330) 672-5368 or 1-888-320-5368 if interested in future programs.
