Kent City Council approves budget for new fiscal year

In a special council meeting last night, members approved several proposed drafts that will become city ordinances. Adoption of the ordinances solidified the Kent city budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The ordinances include:

• Allocation of the number of people employed by the city of Kent in 2007, both full- and part-time.

• Financial support of the Main Street program, designed to increase business in the downtown Kent area.

• Extension of a 2004 ordinance calling for negotiations between the city of Kent and Local Union 721, the International Association of Firefighters. The extension will last until Feb. 28, 2007 and will go into effect immediately.

• Increase of the city’s storm water utility by 2 percent, which will go toward reimbursement for residents who are victims of “certain water and wastewater flooding,” according to the text of the ordinance.

The city of Kent’s fiscal year begins Jan. 1. More information about the city budget is available by visiting City Manager Dave Ruller’s Web site at www.kent360.com.
