The city of Kent division of engineering has closed Summit Street to westbound traffic between Morris Road and South Lincoln Street.

Project inspector Patrick Homan said the road could reopen to two-way traffic as soon as Friday, but the construction may not be finished until Wednesday.

Until that time, eastbound traffic will be maintained while a detour is provided around the construction area using Morris Road, East School Street and South Lincoln Street.

The division of engineering is repairing the street’s curb and performing any necessary maintenance on the sidewalks.

Homan said the street will be repaved before fall semester starts. It may be necessary to completely shut down the same portion of the street at some points during the repaving. Drivers can expect at least one-way traffic during this time.

Homan listed other streets that will be maintained during the rest of the summer. Between now and fall semester, he said to expect maintenance on:

• Morris Road between Summit Street and Rellim Drive

• South Lincoln Street between Summit Street and state Route 59

• North Lincoln Street between state Route 59 and East Crain Avenue

• University Drive and Luther Avenue

Homan said he understands the detours can be frustrating, but the less traffic on the roads being repaired, the faster the work can be completed.
