In the wake of the shooting at Michigan State, many Kent State students may be worried about their safety on campus. But Kent State ranks as one of the safest college campuses according to the FBI crime statistics and this is in part due to increased awareness by the Kent State police. The Kent State campus police hosts an annual “Safety Walk” where police, students and professors walk around campus in order to find places that could be made safer. In addition to patrolling officers, the campus also has over 50 emergency phones and 1,000 security cameras. The Kent State police department spends hours every week training for threats to campus, which is a big difference compared to other campus police departments. Though in the event of an emergency, there is one way to quickly get information on campus, Flash Alerts. Flash Alerts is an automated text messaging service used to notify students of danger or campus closings.
