The gymnastics team celebrates after finishing their vaulting routines during the Beauty and the Beast meet on Jan. 29.

Kent State recently hired Josie Angeny as the new assistant coach of the gymnastics team. She decided during college that she never wanted to leave the sport.

“I honestly have known that I wanted to coach my entire career,” she said.

Angeny was a four-year team member at Kentucky. During her time there, she earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors and All-SEC honors twice and helped lead Kentucky to an NCAA Regional berth. The Flashes’ last NCAA regional appearance was in 2021.

Angeny then transferred to Georgia for her final year and helped lead Georgia to an NCAA Regional berth as well. She was recruited before her fifth year and fell in love with Kent on her visit.

“I got along really well with the recruiting coordinator for Kent, and I just really was aligning with all their values. When I came in for my interview, I loved the area,” Angeny said.

She is also very impressed with the Kent State gymnastics team culture.

“The team has an amazing culture. I love the people here. They’re all here for the right reasons. They all have the same goals, which is really hard to find in college nowadays,” Angeny said.

Looking into the upcoming season, Angeny’s biggest goal for the team is to help them fall in love with the sport again after their decline.

“I definitely just want to help the team fall in love with the sport… They just seem like they’re kind of on a downward slope,” Agency said.

KSU has had one winning season in the previous three years and has not finished first in the Mid-American Conference since 2016.
