A sign announcing the upcoming Main Street Kent Snow Day hangs in the Hometown Bank Plaza of dowtown Kent on Jan. 22, 2024.

Main Street Kent and the city of Kent are organizing a new winter ‘Snow Day’ event featuring indoor and outdoor activities for the community from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 27 in Kent’s Hometown Bank Plaza.

The community and visitors of all ages are invited to the family-friendly event that will feature live music, fire pits, food specials, themed crafts, winter activities and a scavenger hunt around town and at local participating businesses.

“People in the city of Kent have never had this experience available to them before, so we’re excited for that,” said Heather Malarcik, Executive Director of Main Street Kent.

Main Street Kent does not commonly have events planned in January, therefore, ‘Snow Day’ is intended to be a fun community event aimed to help out local businesses who usually are slower around this time of year, according to Malarcik.

Local businesses such as Scribbles Coffee Company, Kent Sportswear, Hippie Fox Rocks, Popped!, Daisy Pops, Bent Tree Coffee Roasters and more will feature activities throughout the event.

Main Street Kent collaborated with North Coast Event Services to bring in a music stage, professional lighting and sound in coordination with the live performers, Malarcik said. The service will also be bringing in five large fire pits that have been approved by the city of Kent’s fire department.

Local businesses schedule for events:

From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Scribbles will give attendees the opportunity to create snowflake coffee filters at no cost; other free crafts and games will also be available. There will be an ice carving exhibition from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Dan Smith Community Park. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., North Water Brewing Company will have a $10 all-you-can-throw axe throwing trailer as well as patio cornhole.

Further information, including times for all local business events and the live music lineup, can be found on the event website.
