Students are bundling up walking to class in below-freezing temperatures, and fashion might be the last thing on their minds.

When it comes to incorporating their own style into winter clothing, Laurel Baker, a sophomore fashion merchandising major, and Jessica Duraj, a senior fashion merchandising major, said layering is most important.

“Layering, when you do it right, is the most stylish because it adds so much more to something like a plain shirt,” Baker said.

Colorful chunky scarves, fuzzy headbands or hats and a thick coat have been staples in looking good and staying warm this winter, Duraj and Baker said.

When going out on the weekends, Baker and Duraj said to skip the crop tops and bundle up instead.

“Even though you might feel cute, it’s just not reasonable,” Baker said.

Growing up in Ohio, Duraj said she has mastered the art of layering pieces.

“I can’t just go out in something and deal with the cold, I need to be wearing lots of layers,” she said. “I’ll wear a turtleneck sweater, winter boots, scarves and hats.”

Most people may not have a chunky scarf or fuzzy hat in their closets already, but Duraj recommended the stores Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, and H&M for cheap, good-quality accessories.

“I’ve been wearing my UGGs every day,” Ryan Papesh, a sophomore construction management major said. Jake Habbyshaw, a freshman business major, agreed that UGGs have been a staple.

Baker, sophomore art education major Julia Barthelmes, Habbyshaw and Papesh each mentioned the Australian slipper brand when sharing what they’ve been wearing this winter.

“I honestly think winter gives you the most availability to show your style,” Baker says.
