FIRST: Scribbles Coffee Company

Strings of fairy lights and a wall of syrups may catch patrons’ eyes when they walk into Scribbles Coffee Company to pick up their favorite seasonal coffee or to have a quiet moment inside the relaxed atmosphere of the coffee shop.

A reason people may enjoy coming to Scribbles is because of its atmosphere and its home-like feel, said Isabella Walter, a sophomore visual communication design major and a Scribbles employee.

One customer, Samuel Ricco, said he enjoyed coming to Scribbles because it is a local business which possesses a home-like feel most chain coffee shops lack.

“It’s not the sterilized feeling of going to a Starbucks and the other burnt coffee beans,” Ricco said.

Currently Scribbles’ most popular coffees are their Irish cream cold brew and tiramisu latte, Walter said.

“I think the tiramisu is [popular] because you can’t find it anywhere else really,” Walter said. “The Irish cream [is popular] because of the season and because we do use our own beans that we roast.”

Other customers like Katie Kraynak said the unique drinks like the blackberry white mocha and tiramisu latte are part of the reason she enjoys frequenting Scribbles.

The convenient locations and the cozy aesthetic are other reasons students may enjoy choosing to stop by Scribbles, Kraynak said.

“The location is perfect for Kent students and super aesthetic and cute,” she said.

Those interested in visiting can find Scribbles Coffee Company at 237 N. Water St. or call 330-346-0337.

SECOND: Bent Tree Coffee

Located not far from Scribbles at 313 N. Water St. is Bent Tree Coffee, where those who desire to work on a few assignments or pick up a cup of their favorite caffeinated beverage often visit the coffee shop.

PJ Ferguson, a senior fashion design major, said they went to Bent Tree to finish some homework.

“[Bent Tree] is a nice little place to do work,” Ferguson said.

They said they have attempted to complete their homework in other downtown coffee shops, like Last Exit, but the Wi-Fi at Bent Tree Coffee is more reliable.

“I think [Bent Tree] is pretty good… I don’t know, every time we go to Last Exit that Wi-Fi is just struggling,” Ferguson said.

A reason many enjoy going to the coffee shop is because Bent Tree makes their own coffee, Ferguson said.

“They make their coffee and it’s a smaller local place and I think people like that a bit more,” Ferguson said.

Customers like Ethan Vannatta enjoy frequenting Bent Tree to order their favorite caffeinated beverages. Vannatta said he often goes to Bent Tree to order an espresso or cortado, a part espresso and steamed milk beverage.

“I really like espresso and honestly they’re the only one in Kent that seems to know how to make espresso,” Vannatta said.

Bent Tree Coffee can be contacted at 330-474-7255.

THIRD: Tree City Coffee

Another spot students often venture to study is Tree City Coffee in Acorn Alley; however, its atmosphere and seasonal flavors also draws customers in.

Lydia Welton, a sophomore marketing major, said she chose to meet her friend at Tree City to catch up with each other and thinks others come to Tree City to do the same.

“It’s just a good place to come and catch up because that’s what we’re doing right now,” Welton said.

Jacqueline Johnson, a senior aeronautics major, said she enjoyed working on homework in Tree City as it is a nice change from other study spots.

“It’s a nice change-up from studying in the library 24/7,” Johnson said. “It’s nice to come down here and I feel like it’s more quiet and slow paced.

Tree City Coffee isn’t just known for their coffee, they have great selection of pastries too, shown on April 1st, 2024. Tree City Coffee can be found at 135 E Erie St, Kent, OH. (Brittany Lucia )

The ability to customize orders is another reason people enjoy coming to Tree City, Johnson said.

“I feel they have a lot of variety in flavors, like, you can add any type of syrup you want to your lattes or to your lemonades,” she said. “I got both today. I got a raspberry lemonade and Thin Mint latte.”

Tree City also offers seasonal flavors, which changes monthly, setting them apart from other coffee shops, Johnson said.

“They have a lot more options to try so every time you come here you can get something different which is nice,” she said.

Located in Acorn Alley at 135 E. Erie St., Tree City Coffee can be reached at 330-673-5522.
