Katherine’s Flick Pick: ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’

With the movie “Captain America: the Winter Solider” coming out April 4, it’s important to revisit the first installment of the series.

The film is set at the height of WWII and Steve Rogers is denied his request to join the United States military due to his small stature and various medical problems. Rogers’ mind is still coveted, though, and allows him to take part in an experiment to make him a super solider.

Even with his new body, it takes him longer than the viewer expects to go into battle. When he finally does, he kicks the butt of Johann Schmidt, one of Hilter’s henchmen who has found the Tesseract, a mysterious device that allows the Nazis to create weapons of mass destruction.

Just as Schmidt is about to destroy New York City, Rogers — who has become known as Captain America — saves the day. It’s at a cost, though. He crashes his ship into the Arctic Ocean and wakes up more than 70 years later in modern day New York, setting up the 2012 film, “The Avengers.”

The new film definitely has big shoes to fill.
