Backhoe demolishes sculpture

Work crews have torn down “Tilt 2005,” the piece of art that looks like a stack of newspapers in front of the Art building.

University officials decided to take it down because of safety concerns.

“I’m just as disappointed as anybody to lose this piece,” Bruder said. “But with the safety hazard, we had to take it down.”

The sculpture was constructed in 2005 by artist Steven Siegel with help from students. While the piece, which is actually hollow, looks like it is made entirely of newspaper, the sculpture was actually fashioned using 2-by-4 inch pieces of wood topped with sheets of paper and then covered with dirt.
