A Kent State police sergeant winds yellow rope that was used to cordon off the immediate area around the Victory Bell on the Commons at Kent State University. Jerry Lewis, an emeritus professor of sociology and a witness to the May 4, 1970 shootings. rang the bell to remember the four students who were killed at Kent State 50 years ago, along with the two students killed May 14, 1970 at Jackson State. Despite the cancellation of events related to the May 4 50th anniversary—alternatives were offered online—the annual tradition of a candlelight march and the vigil in the Prentice Hall parking lot continued with face masks and social distancing in place.
