The Kent State softball team captured its first home win Wednesday, defeating Youngstown State 2-1.

The Flashes (11-8) have beaten YSU in seven out of the ten games all-time.

The first inning began with the Penguins jumping on to a 1-0 lead after a solo home run.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Flashes were able to score with graduate student Alexandria Whitmore making it to home base.

Whitmore took her team-leading sixth base of the season to move into scoring position, and she hustled to cross home plate on a single by senior Emily Lippe.

Neither team was able to score between the second and fifth innings.

Sophomore pitcher Macy Irelan finished with six strikeouts and no walks.

After the first home run, Youngstown only had two hits for the rest of the game.

The Penguins also did not have a batter reach base after the third inning.

The Flashes were able to score again in the bottom of the sixth inning with sophomore Carley Penner.

With two outs, Penner extended the inning with a single. Sophomore Brynn Libler threw a shot down the right field line for a triple, which brought Penner to home.

Neither team was able to score throughout the rest of the game.

Kent State will return to action this weekend in Riverdale, New York, with three games against Manhattan.
