The Kent State women’s basketball team opened its 2008-09 season with a 95-58 win over Youngstown State this afternoon at the M.A.C. Center.

Five players scored in double figures to lead the Flashes to their highest scoring total since a 99-64 win over Ball State on Feb. 14, 2004. They topped 80 points just once all of last season.

Senior center Anna Kowalska scored 19 points to lead the team, and junior guard Rachel Bennett scored 18. Sophomore forward Chenel Harris, freshman guard Jena Stutzman and sophomore guard Jamilah Humes each added 13 points.

The Flashes (1-0) made the Penguins pay for their mistakes, forcing 29 turnovers and scoring 38 points off those turnovers.

Kent State will return to action on the road, as the Flashes will play at Delaware State at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
