The Muslim Students’ Association at Kent State elected a new five-member council at its meeting Wednesday night in the Student Center.

Yacine Djemil, sophomore accounting major, is the new student president. Other members of the council include Omar Taboub, Murad Assad, Harith Al Niemi and Hamzah Khalas.

MSA members also planned upcoming events for the semester. Fast-a-thon, a day when students fast to honor the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, is scheduled for Oct. 3 at the Kent Mosque on Crane Avenue.

The MSA will host a dinner at the mosque for every participant after fast is broken at sundown.

“Fast-a-thon is a great event with good food, great people and gives (students) a chance to meet new friends on campus while learning about an important part of our faith,” Djemil said. “We encourage everyone to come.”

Tickets will be sold in the Student Center later this month. Djemil said there may be a small charge for participation.
