Portage County Red Cross to honor brave, local heroes

The American Red Cross of Portage County will honor local heroes who have performed acts of bravery in their communities at the seventh annual Real Heroes Breakfast tomorrow.

The event will take place at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine Conference Center from 10 a.m. to noon.

“The Real Heroes Breakfast is an opportunity for the American Red Cross of Portage County to acknowledge unselfish and courageous acts of community members,” said Ann Otto, Real Heroes Breakfast co-chair, in a press release.

Individuals will be recognized for assisting in emergency circumstances. Those who devote their time to helping their communities will be honored as well.

“Real Heroes aren’t always in the news or on television,” Otto said. “Sometimes, they are just ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”

Diana Skok, a business manager in the chemistry department, will receive an award for performing CPR and saving the life of a 4-year-old boy who drowned in a swimming pool. The boy made a full recovery.
