Common hobbies for college students can include writing, exercising, painting or even crocheting.

However, for sophomore general business major Loren, referred to by first name only for privacy, hobbies include performing as a drag king for crowds under the stage name Himbo.

Himbo was bitten by the drag bug in May of last year after performing in a fundraiser show, Suicide is a Drag. While that was his first performance, drag had been on his mind for a while.

“I have always liked to dance,” Himbo said. “So I just thought, you know, it’d be kind of fun to throw on, make costumes and do a jig.”

After his first show, Himbo began performing regularly around the Kent and Cleveland area.

“So I was like, ‘I’m gonna promote my own show,’” he said. “I ended up doing that and it kind of just went from there. That was the gateway drug.”

Himbo said he incorporates his business prowess into drag, including how much money he makes and how to sell himself as a performer.

“Doing drag is kind of like being entrepreneurial. The business is yourself,” he said.

However, school still takes top priority over being Himbo.

“School must come first, no matter what, because that’s what really matters,” he said.

While he is leaving his future open to wherever his academic career takes him, Himbo credits drag as an outlet to express his creativity and spread enjoyment.

“We just want to make people laugh,” he said. “Get Himbo up there, and he’s gonna do something stupid.”

For others thinking of starting drag, he said go for it.

“Go in with 100%,” he said. “Don’t dip your toe in, dive in the water.”
