The Kent State University Surplus Store, located a

The Kent State University Surplus Store, located at 414 E. Main St., resells items the university no longer uses for affordable prices.

The store is open every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and carries items such as chairs, couches, desks, electronics, books and more.

Jeremy Watson came into the department three years ago and is now the storekeeper for the outlet.

In June 2015, Dee Dee Blanchard was found stabbed

In June 2015, Dee Dee Blanchard was found stabbed to death in her home. The two responsible were none other than her daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Nicholas Godejohn, Gypsy’s boyfriend.

Although this murder was already gruesome enough to make headlines, it also dominated national news for years due to the confusing and shocking background details of the case.

Dee Dee had convinced the public and multiple health professionals for years that her daughter Gypsy was severely handicapped. She utilized this storyline in order to get money and other benefits from the government and amusement parks like Disney World. She was even able to get a house for free from Habitat for Humanity.

Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hills)

Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hills) said on Tuesday, Senate Bill 83 will not have enough votes to pass through the House.

Stephens has been adamant before about the bill needing to change in order to have enough support. This message contrasts with what has previously been seen in the Ohio Senate, where Senate Bill 83 passed in a 21-10 vote in May.

After going through the Senate, the bill underwent a number of changes from its original form, including building fewer barriers between Ohio universities and Chinese schools and exemptions from certain American history courses. Ultimately, Stephens still does not see enough support generated for the bill to pass through the Higher Education Committee.

The U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive T

The U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) is offering a $1,500 reward to individuals who can provide information that could lead to the arrest of 44-year-old Dawan R. Wilson, the man charged with the murder of a 35-year-old pregnant woman in Kent on Nov. 21, according to Kent Police lieutenant Mike Lewis.

The police and NOVFTF have released a recent photo of Wilson and a photo of the car they believed he used to arrive at the crime scene, Lewis said.

From these photos, Lewis said the police and NOVFTF believe the vehicle is key as it possesses distinctive features making it easier to identify.

The university’s chapter of Her Campus, an online magazine designed to empower college women, ran a thrift and craft sale in the Student Center Thursday afternoon.

Previously, the organization held four thrift sales since the fall 2022 semester, where members and external entities donated clothes to the sale.

Aislinn Foran, Her Campus president and junior communications major, said she first generated the idea of hosting a thrift sale several years ago.

Kent State’s Africana studies department held a

Kent State’s Africana studies department held a welcome ceremony Thursday morning for the delegation of students from the University of Fort Hare, a part of the Heritage Ubuntu Student Fellowship.

Two years ago, the Heritage Ubuntu Student Fellowship was created to allow students from both Kent and the University of Fort Hare to study at each university and study various cultures, Felix Kumah-Abiwu, associate professor of Africana studies and director of the Center for African Studies, said.

The welcome ceremony started with opening remarks from Kumah-Abiwu, who quoted Nelson Mandela while welcoming the masters and doctoral students.

For the 2023-2024 school year, the university welc

For the 2023-2024 school year, the university welcomed the highest international student population prior to 2018.

This year 2,089 international students from countries such as India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia have chosen to study at the university, said Jef Davis, associate director for International Student and Scholar Services.

“We went through some declines… since the pandemic started as did most other institutions and then we started seeing a rebounding,” Davis said.

With tensions rising from the Palestine-Israel war

With tensions rising from the Palestine-Israel war, Kent State President Todd Diacon took the time to explain the university’s core values of kindness, respect and free speech in this semester’s installment of his online session, “Talking with Todd.”

This is not the first time Diacon has spoken about these core values as earlier in the semester he spoke to the freshmen about them during his convocation speech.

“I urged these new students to embrace our identity, to embrace this commitment and to learn how to agree and to learn how to disagree, and to do so in a respectful and kind manner,” Diacon said.

After starting the season with five consecutive road games, the Kent State women’s basketball team played in front of a home crowd Wednesday.

The Flashes (4-2) defeated Coppin State (3-5) 77-40.

“It’s been quite the last nine or ten days with a lot of traveling,” coach Todd Starkey said. “It kind of showed in the first quarter when we got off to a slow start and struggled to find our rhythm.’

I fell in love with writing my first semester at Kent State in 2022, and to my surprise, my talent took over like wildfire. Throughout my short life thus far, my possession of “talent” has been missing; I’ve lacked aspiration and a role model to show me the joys of a skillful hobby.

Despite my misdirection, I’ve found myself consumed in love with words and writing when nothing of substance had the power to consume me prior.
