Field Hockey victorious against Indiana, finishes 2-0 on weekend road trip

Kent State University women’s field hockey (7-5) beat University of Indiana (4-7) by a score of 5-1 on Sunday.

The Flashes’ offense set the tone early with three goals in the first period, scored by freshman forward Claudia Ortiz, senior midfielder Berta Jover Llorens and freshman back Maria Cambra Soler.

“I think we were just kind of hungry from Friday night and just wanted to put more goals in than one,” coach Kyle Desandes-Moyer said. “We executed on [penalty] corners which was great and that gave off a ton of energy.”

Kent’s two other goals came in the third and fourth period and were scored by sophomore forward Luisa Knapp and junior forward Hailie Balachick.

“We played Kent State field hockey for 60 minutes and we were very pleased with the changes we asked them to make from Friday,” Desandes-Moyer said.

Defensively, the Flashes’ allowed just one goal scored by sophomore forward Hailey Couch on six shots overall.

“We put pressure on early, so our forwards were putting on pressure high on the field which really helped minimize (Indiana’s) attack,” Desandes-Moyer said.

Kent’s senior goalie Mary Crumlish recorded one save, but only faced two shots on goal throughout the afternoon.

“The Miami game next week for us will be big because it’s a MAC game,” Desandes-Moyer said. “We are looking forward and getting prepared for that matchup.”

The Flashes’ look to keep the winning streak alive on Friday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. at home against Mid-American Conference rival Miami University (7-5).
